KK Venugopal to Continue Term as Attorney General of India

KK Venugopal was appointed as 15th attorney general in 2017 and now as his tenure of 3 years was getting over, he has accepted Government’s request to serve as attorney general beyond June 30.

Considering his present age, the 89year-old veteran senior advocate said that he should prefer a new tenure of 1 year.

Attorney General serves as a central government’s top law officer and chief legal advisor who represents the government of India in front of SC in crucial cases. The post of Attorney General is a creation of article 76 of the Indian Constitution.

He has defended the NDA government in many unbending matters such as Rafael fighter jet deal, Aadhaar cases, and Babri masjid case.

He is also awarded Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
